Syndrome Basic Facts

. Wednesday, January 14, 2009

The case presented was a 55 year old woman who complained of dry eyes and dry mouth. Her eyes often felt “itchy,” and “scratchy” when she blinked. Her eating preferences had moved towards moist or juicy foods, as she had trouble chewing and swallowing dry foods. Her lips often felt dry. She also began to have dental cavities.

The student physicians were asked what they were thinking, and what tests they would order. After some wild guesses, they began to home-in on the answer and suggested a number of tests and asked for more information.

They found out the woman’s dry eyes had been daily, and for longer than three months duration. Yes, she said it felt like sand in her eyes. Similarly, her mouth had been dry-feeling daily for longer than three months, and she felt the need to drink water to help her swallow. Yes, she did think her cheeks may be swollen.

No, she did not have any arthritis or kidney disease. No, she did not have HIV, her chest x-ray was normal, and she never had radiation to her head and neck (which might have damaged her tear- and saliva-producing glands).

The students were proud of themselves when they learned blood tests and a biopsy had established the diagnosis, Sjögren’s Syndrome
What is Sjögren’s?

First, how is it pronounced? Dr. Sjögren was Swedish (some publications erroneously say Danish). It is pronounced “Shø-gren” (with the first vowel sound as in French “feu”), although many Americans say “SHOW-gren.”

It is an autoimmune disease with symptoms as described above. The person feels as if she has dry eyes and mouth, and this dryness is called sicca, Latin for dryness.

Autoimmune means for some reason the body seems to be having an immune reaction against itself. In this condition, it seems as if the body’s immune system is attacking the lacrimal and salivary glands, cutting off the supply of tears and saliva.

Types of Sjögren’s

Sicca features are sometimes found in other diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and systemic sclerosis; less often, in conditions like sarcoidosis. In all those cases, it is called Associated Sjögren’s

But when sicca occurs without those conditions, and without a history of other conditions that could cause sicca, such as radiation treatment to the face, then it is Primary Sjögren’s Syndrome (SS).

What is Happening?

“Something” (as yet unidentified) activates cells in the involved glands. The “something” might be a virus infection, for example. This leads to changes in the blood vessels, then release of chemokines that draw inflammatory cells to the gland. Lymphocytes flood in, jamming up the gland and impairing the production of tears or saliva. The lymphocytes also react with the altered blood vessels, consider them “foreign,” and establish a permanent immune response within lymphocyte memory. This is the “autoimmune” feature. Lymphocytes with this memory may attack blood vessels elsewhere that seem similar enough.

Who Gets Sjögren’s?

About 90% of cases are female. It occurs in two peaks: after the surge of adolescent hormones, i.e., late 20s, and after menopause. This suggests some relation to drops in estrogen levels. Generally, this is the same population in which systemic lupus occurs, suggesting a possible similar etiology.
How is It Diagnosed?

It’s diagnosed from the symptoms as well as tests. Available tests include blood tests (ANA, SS-A antibodies) and biopsy, especially of the easily accessible lacrimal gland.

Can It Be Cured?

No. But SS by itself can be treated with topical products: artificial tears, substitute saliva. Sometimes anti-inflammatory medications are used. Rarely, the activated lymphocytes may progress to a serious lymphoproliferative disease.

Natural Healing in Autoimmune Disease

Cytokines are proteins such as interferon that are produced by white blood cells during the immune response.
Specific cytokines have specific actions although all cytokines modulate or influence the immune response, for instance by reducing or increasing inflammation, redness, or fever during injury and in immune-mediated diseases.

Cytokines are also known to perpetuate the autoimmune disease process in patients with autoimmune disorders, and are considered responsible for most chronic diseases.

Bioflavinoids

A class of plant chemicals known as bioflavinoids (also known as flavinoids and flavonoids) has been found to dramatically reduce inflammation.

Bioflavinoids especially beneficial in autoimmune disease include catechins and theaflavins in tea and chocolate; anthocyanidins found in apples and cherries; quercetin in citrus pulp; and the herbs boswellia; turmeric; and ginger.
Reduction in C-Reactive Protein (CRP)

C-Reactive Protein (CRP) is a natural protein molecule found within the body that rises in inflammation. Blood tests for CRP are used to diagnose autoimmune diseases and confirm disease flares. A reduction in the CRP level is seen in patients who have a favorable response to medications or other therapies.

Researchers at Michigan State University found that diets higher in bioflavinoids were associated with lower CRP levels. They concluded that intake of flavinoid rich foods may reduce inflammation-mediated chronic diseases. They also noted that serum CRP concentrations were typically higher in women, older adults, blacks, smokers, persons with high body mass indexes, and a sedentary lifestyle.

Neuroprotection

Many autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS) are injurious to the nervous system. Chinese researchers have determine that citrus flavanones such as quercetin, hesperidin and hesperetin protect the nervous system from the effects of oxidative stress. Oxidative stress, with resulting glutamate accumulations, is considered one of the key pathological features in MS and other neurodegenerative disorders.

In several recent studies, a number of plant flavinoids, particularly luteolin, found in celery and green peppers have been found to reduce the inflammatory response in the brain. Luteolin has been found to taper the activity of the immune system cells of the nervous system known as microglia. Microglial activation is responsible for initiating the inflammatory response in neurodegenerative diseases.

Benefits of Plant Compounds

Current drug therapies used in autoimmune disease are generally immunosuppressive agents with the potential to worsen non-immunological mechanisms in the body. The resulting side effects include ischemia, kidney damage, hypertension, susceptibility to infection and elevated lipid levels. Used long-term these agents can also cause bone loss, fibrosis, and cardiac problems.

Bioflavinoids are free of these dangerous effects and have the potential to nurture and strengthen multiple bodily systems. For instance, luteolin in green peppers and celery has been shown to benefit the heart, kidney, skin, endocrine system and lungs. Plant bioflavinoids are also readily available and easy to add to one's diet and they're inexpensive. Currently, researchers are working with extracts of pine. Bioflavinoids found in pine have been found to act as powerful quenchers of free radicals, dramatically reducing oxidative stress and protecting against inflammation.

Sytropin HGH: Find Out What Sytropin HGH Gaba Spray Can do For You

. Tuesday, January 6, 2009
0 comments

HGH supplements comprise an industry which sees a lot of controversy and naysayers. Because it has such a bad, or at least misunderstood, reputation, many people are not even aware of all the HGH enhancers and releasers available on the market today. As such, it only stands to reason that they do not understand the many potential benefits either. This is distressing, if only because a great many people could be seriously helped by human growth hormone.

Before understanding how, it is first important to understand exactly what this hormone does and why it is so vital and essential. Succinctly, HGH is considered to be the cornerstone of aging. When the levels produced in the body begin to decline, this speeds up the aging process. It may happen faster in some people than in others but it always comes to the same thing. As you get older, you begin to put on weight, your immune system is not as strong as it once was, and you begin to lose muscle mass and strength. You have less energy in both your daily life and in specialized aspects, such as it pertains to your libido. Your metabolic rate begins to slow down to a sluggish pace. Of course, wrinkles and lines begin to appear, and your skin begins to lose its firmness and elasticity as well.

This is where human growth hormone enhancers and, specifically, Sytropin, becomes helpful. This is not a derivative of HGH, at least not entirely. It is a supplement of synthetic human growth hormone, which makes it incredibly safe. It is thus safe to use regularly. Studies show that it can decrease a person's level of body fat and, in turn, increase the muscle mass, thereby improving the muscular deterioration which occurs during natural aging. People who use this product, which is actually a spray infused with human growth hormone, have more energy and even sleep better. To put it simply, the way it works is by stimulating the body so that it produces more of its own HGH. There are even thoughts that it can improve the skin tone and eliminate or at least minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Sytropin does not require a prescription. Since it is a dietary supplement, it is easy to order. Further, since it is a supplement, it does not require approval from the Federal Food and Drug Administration. All the same, it complies in manufacturer standards and practices with the strictest of FDA guidelines. As yet, there have been no negative side effects reported in concordance with the use of this product. In fact, since Sytropin is a spray, it is actually much safer than other products. For instance, it does not encourage stomach problems.

All that being said, Sytropin is not recommended for children without a doctor's ok. As well, people who are taking MAOI inhibitors should stay away from this product. Seeing the doctor before beginning this product is a good idea as well, and it is always possible to call the makers in order to find out if anything you are taking could war with the Sytropin HGH spray.

Otherwise, taking this product is incredibly easy. You only have to ingest two complete sprays each morning. The liquid is then held under the tongue for about two minutes to make it absorb easier. This process is repeated at night.

5 Ways to Stop a Post Nasal Drip

.

Getting that dreaded post nasal drip is a sure sign that things are not working well in the nasal area.

Furthermore leaving it untreated can allow it to develop and cause a variety of health problems and leave you feeling ill and miserable.

Sinus & sinusitis conditions go hand in hand with a post nasal drip so getting relief from the PND could alleviate sinus problems as well.

What Causes a PND?

Mucus is a natural defense mechanism created by the body but when the production of the mucus is increased it is done so to fight an infection or allergy.

If it is not disposed of by a properly functioning system it can cause the post nasal drip and other infections.

This condition is mainly caused by sinusitis, rhinitis, acid reflux or by allergies at any time of the year.

If the Post Nasal Drip is Left Untreated it could lead to the following;

  • Sore Throat

  • Upper Respiratory Infections

  • Ear Infections

  • Sinus Infections

  • Bad Breath

It is therefore advisable to seek treatment for a post nasal drip before you become a victim of one of the above conditions.

As there are several causes of a post nasal drip it is advisable to undergo an examination by a ear, nose, and throat physician to establish the cause & appropriate treatment - especially if it has developed into a bacterial infection which would require a course of antibiotics to get rid of.

The following are 5 Ways to Treat a PND

  1. Antihistamines & Decongestants

  2. Nasal Sprays

  3. Drink Lots of Water

  4. Do Not Sleep on Your Back

  5. Avoidance of Certain Allergens

In conclusion not all PND conditions can be cured with the above methods but if you try the easy suggestions mentioned above you'll find that your post nasal drip problems could be a thing of the past.

Weight Loss Tips For Teenage People

.

In these modern times weight loss tips for teenage people are in demand. This is especially true with teenage people in the more affluent countries. If you are a teenager and are concerned about your weight you need to consider the next question seriously. Are you truly overweight or do you just have everybody telling you that you are?

Peers (your friends), advertisements, television, radio and many other sources have a way of making you feel guilty about your weight if you don't look like some Hollywood star. There is nothing wrong with wanting to look great but this can be taken overboard. Many teenage people, young women in particular, are overly concerned with their weight, even starving themselves and ruining their health. I doubt if that is your situation but you need to be aware of the problem and be sure you're not in this category.

Your body is still growing and maturing needing proper nutrition and at times your physical proportions can be off a bit. We used to know a young man that had an enormously large head for his body size. We used to call him "Big Head Bill". Man did he have a cranium! Guess what, as he became an adult his body caught up and even though his head is the same size we no longer call him "Big Head Bill", well maybe once in a while. Now what if Bill was obsessed with his large head and tried desperate measures to reduce its size. I can't imagine what he would do but he might end up hurting himself in some way!

This may be somewhat funny but the same could be true with you. You're still growing into an adult and you may feel a bit awkward and may even be teased about your physical appearance yet most likely things will work out. Bill didn't care; he told everyone that his big head housed an enormously large brain. If you think about it, that was a pretty smart attitude to have!

You need to be reasonable with your view of yourself. Ask "Do I feel I am overweight or is everyone telling me I am?" Now if you feel you do need to lose a few pounds why not get a second opinion just to be safe. Ask your parents. I know, you don't want to get them involved. Well it is a good idea but if you would rather not you could ask another adult, (not a teenager), that you feel comfortable with maybe a relative or your teacher (your doctor?). Weight loss tips for teenage people (adults too!) can be found at this non profit site. Take a short test here (www.weightlosstest.org) to give you a good idea of where you should be.

If you decide that you still need to lose some weight be sure to go about it responsibly. Eat healthy meals and don't skip any, especially breakfast. Exercise and get plenty of sleep. Any quality weight loss program worth it's salt will make sure you do all of the above and more to keep you healthy and strong, oh and I almost forgot, feel great about yourself!

Should You Bake Your Own Bread?

. Friday, January 2, 2009
0 comments

Maybe you’ve never heard it before, but you really should be baking your own bread.

Why?

I think the number one reason everyone should bake their own bread is that it redeems you from years of bad health and medical bills. How so?

HOMEMADE BREAD IS HEALTHIER

It is much healthier to bake your own bread instead of buying bread that contains chemical additives, hydrogenated oils, unhealthy preservatives, and fattening sweeteners.

If you buy white bread you're also getting bread that is nutritionless, but don't be fooled, store bought whole wheat bread is just as bad for you.

A lot of times the whole wheat bread sold in stores isn't really made out of "whole meal" but is just white bread that is colored (using caramel) to make it appear like it's whole grain and healthy.

Store bought whole wheat bread also contains the same emulsifiers, and chemical by products that are in store bought white bread.

When you bake your own bread you never have to worry about these "hidden dangers" or chemicals in bread.

Instead you can control every ingredient that goes into your bread, and you'll know exactly how it is processed and created.

There are many other great incentives for baking homemade whole wheat bread, and I’ll go into each one below.

HOMEMADE BREAD TASTES BETTER THAN STORE BOUGHT

Absolutely no argument here. Everyone I’ve met agrees that the taste of homemade bread far surpasses that of store bought bread, (some have even said they could taste the chemicals in the store bought bread and really hated it).

Taste is a biggie for a lot of people, and since everyone wants to eat tasty meals, you can’t go wrong by baking your own bread.

HOMEMADE BREAD SAVES YOU MONEY

It’s much cheaper to buy all the ingredients for making bread separately, than buying them already made into bread. You can easily save $30 or $40 dollars a month, by baking your own bread. This might not sound like much but over time, believe me, it adds up.

This is especially true if you buy as many of your bread ingredients as you can, in the bulk department of a supermarket.

An entire bag of whole wheat flour (enough to make 4 to 6 loaves) could cost $4.00 or less. This is just one example of how cheap baking your own bread is.

HOMEMADE BREAD IS LOWER IN FAT THIS = WEIGHT LOSS

My favorite reason for baking bread, is that, if you bake the right kind of bread (like whole wheat bread) it can be a great way to help you lose pounds or maintain a healthy weight.

I’m sure you’ve heard the myth before that bread is really fattening, it’s a myth at least for homemade whole wheat bread.

Store bought bread really is fattening because of all the extras that large scale manufacturers stuff their bread with.

Manufacturers do this to give their bread longer shelf life and to make the bread look more appealing so they’ll get more customers to buy their bread.

These big corporate CEO’s could care less if their bread causes you to pack on pounds. You’ve got to remember, after all, that they’re only in it for the money.

But if you bake your own whole wheat bread you’ll have a truly wholesome bread that will help you to achieve the healthy body and goal weight you desire.

Author Resource:- Don’t think you can bake your own whole wheat bread? Don’t know where to start? I\'ll teach you how to bake your very own bread with no hassle, in simple steps.

Best Diet for You

.

Because there are so many different diet options available on the market today, it is extremely difficult to find a healthy diet plan right for you. Some plans force you to limit your carbohydrate intake, some force you to reduce fat, and some require you to severely limit your calorie intake. How do you find the right plan for you?

There are many diets that can work but you must make the commitment to stick to them. The best diet for you is the one that you feel most comfortable following for the long-term. To do that, you need to find a plan that contains foods you like to eat and fits your lifestyle.

Such a plan can help you lose weight and help you keep those extra pounds off.

HOW TO CHOOSE AN EATING PLAN

For most people, simply cutting back on their usual dietary habits is not enough. You may need a more structured program in order to change the bad habits that put on your extra weight in the first place. You must not only limit your food but change those negative behaviors.

Weight loss should never be about deprivation. Ultimately, this does not work for anyone over the long-term. If you feel like you are being too severely restricted, you will feel dissatisfied and more inclined to cheat. You must choose an eating plan that includes the foods you love to eat.

Never try to follow a diet that is very low in calories. Low-calories diets produce quick weight loss but the weight you lose is water and muscle, not fat. You are also much more likely to gain the weight back very quickly. Additionally, low-calorie diets are VERY unhealthy for your body.

Avoid diet plans that are based on unrealistic expectations, like completely eliminating certain foods or eating only certain foods at certain times. If it sounds unhealthy, it probably is.

Also, be very wary of plans that make fantastic promises. If it sounds unrealistic, it probably is.

CUSTOMIZE A DIET PLAN FOR YOU.

Your first priority should be to choose an eating plan that fits you, not your friend, your spouse, or your boss. Remember, make your decision based on something that you can stick with for life, not for a week or a month.

Find a plan that you can enjoy without feeling deprived or you will not be able to stay with it. Choose healthy foods, but also choose foods that you enjoy. Choose a balanced meal plan that includes a wide variety of foods, vitally important for a diet you can live with.

The key ingredients for a healthy diet are high fiber foods, including most vegetables and some fruits, whole grains, lean proteins, low-fat dairy foods, healthy oils (olive oil and fatty fish), and lots and lots of water. Avoid high sugar foods and white flour foods (most of the processed foods that are available in your grocery store).

EXERCISE DAILY.

Exercise revs up your metabolism, increasing your rate of weight loss. It strengthens your heart by pumping more blood, lowers blood pressure and reduces your cholesterol levels.

Modify your diet as you reach your goal weight, adding variety in the form of foods that you love to eat. Add some regular aerobic exercise (walking, jogging, skating, etc.). Before you know it, you will feel better, look better, and be living a healthier lifestyle.

Finish Eating Late To Feel Terrific

A healthy lifestyle will make you stronger and improve your mental and personal health.

You're taking steps toward a healthy body and mind when you open to eat greater, exercise more, and reduce stress. Avoiding smoking and only drinking alcohol in moderation is also included in a healthy lifestyle.

It won't take long before present you notice increased enterprise and feel more confident.

You may feel motivated to live a healthy lifestyle every day when you lead off to be able accomplish more and not wear out so easily.

An important benefit of a healthy lifestyle is the lower risk of serious illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. This will improve your probability of living a longer life.

Obesity is a serious problem facing individuals now, yet numerous people don't realise the problems associated with being overweight.

Those who are overweight have more serious health risks and present a higher than normal chance of getting certain diseases like diabetes. Those who lose weight significantly reduce the possibility of developing one of these conditions.

Those who are overweight also face body issues because of their poor self-esteem. They might reduce to fad or crash diets to lose the extra weight, which may also lead to certain ailments.

These individuals also display a high risk of developing heart problems in the future.

While some citizens may display the perfect diet, if they are smokers, it could all go to waste.
Incredibly, smoking is the biggest killer in the UK with an estimated one in five deaths attributed to the habit. There are plenty of theories related to how smoking could cut a person's lifespan, but the one that experts back the most is that for every cigarette a person smokes, they will lose five minutes of their life.

Heart diseases, lung diseases, and cancer are the three biggest dangers of smoking and that's just the tip of the iceberg. From asthma to emphysema, kidney cancer to bladder cancer, and heart attacks to strokes, the list goes on.
But, one thing's for positive; smoking has massive dangers and is medically proven to cut short members of public's lives.

Exercise is extremely important in now's world. With the rise of video games, computer games, desk jobs, and fast food, the body needs to exercise to stay healthy. Exercise can make you feel good.

Myriads folk feel a 'rush' when they exercise hard; this is in fact a rush of endorphins. Endorphins make the body and mind feel illustrious.

Exercise is important to keep your muscles flexible and to keep them from becoming atrophied, which means that a integral of the body starts to waste away.

The more exercise a individual gets, the more physically fit they are, and the more they are able to do. Exercise is also important when you need to lose weight, as diet alone might not always do it.

Doctors and medical professionals frequently recount their patients that eating healthy and exercising are important.

Yet, those professionals seldom chronicle their patients why they should do that. The simple answer is that the human being will feel greater once they begin doing those things.

Once they begin losing weight, they also commence feeling superior about themselves. Their body image changes, and they launch acting or adorning in a variant style. This increase in own worth also helps them focus on other zones of their life that they might present neglected in the days gone by these as their marriage or home life.

If you require to reach a goal of being healthy and fit, then you need to live a healthy lifestyle and do everything you can to take care of yourself. Changing your eating and exercise habits will improve your health.

Quitting bad habits like smoking is also sound for your health. Getting healthy and fit doesn't indicate you should go to the extreme with diet and exercise.

If you eat mostly healthy foods, then eating a dessert should not harm you. Don't do too much exercise every one of at once. It's better to enter out slow and do the classification of exercise you like.

Can You Attain Weight Loss While Fasting?

This makes EFA's an important part of your diet. Other sources of these fats are fish and nuts. Most of the fat in my diet comes from a combination of nuts and flax seed oil.

Flax Seed Oil is also known as Linseed Oil. FlaxSeed is a blue flowering plant that is grown on the Western Canadian Prairies for its oil rich seeds.

FlaxSeed oil is highly recommended for the general well being, whole body nutrition and helps in restoring body's natural balance of good and bad prostaglandins.

But now let¡¯s talk about the nutritional values of flax seed.

They are the best source for Omega 3 fatty acids, which is great for the brain and concentration. Adding flax seeds to your diet can increase your ability to concentrate better and think faster.

One way to influence brain health
through diet is to consume the right fats and oils. Like olive, canola, and most other plant oils, flax seed oil is highly unsaturated and heart-healthy.

Can You Attain Weight Loss While Fasting?

Fasting, when done properly, can be a basic part of a solid weight loss plan. If done correctly it can be a great start to your new way of living. When I first started my weight loss program I began with a fast.

I have fasted for 2-7 days on a few different occasions. The reason that fasting
can be such a great way to start a weight loss program is because you can see results immediately.

It will also make it very easy to stick to your diet for the first week. After not eating for a few days, your food will taste better.

This is a great time to go a few days eating only fruits and vegetables. This can easily turn your two day fast into a 7 day, full body cleanse.

Fasting can make you look much thinner in only a couple days. You may not lose a significant amount of weight, but it will look like you have.

It can make your waist noticeably thinner and clear up blemishes or skin problems.

Although I do not think fasting is to be used specifically for weight loss, I think you can do it to get your body ready for a healthier way of living.

Use it as a way to cleanse your body out and get rid of all the toxins clogging your system.

But that should come as no big surprise, since any highly unsaturated oil will do that, particularly if substituted for saturated fats. Flax Hull Lignans are very beneficial for many health conditions.

Studies have shown that SDG or lignan (secoisolariciresinol diglycoside, but for simplicity this
substance will be referred to as lignans) In large doses, or when taken with inadequate water, flaxseed may precipitate bowel obstruction via a mass effect. The effects of flaxseed on blood glucose levels are not clear, although hyperglycemic effects have been reported in one case series.

Omega-3 fatty acids are long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (18-22 carbon atoms in chain length) with the first of many double bonds beginning with the third carbon atom (when counting from the methyl end of the fatty acid molecule).

Read on for more details on flax seed benefits. There are many benefits to adding flax seeds to your diet. Well for instance they can get rid of your constipation problem.

I suggest drinking fruit and vegetable juices while fasting. I have read that you should do a water fast, but it can be a miserable experience if you have never fasted before. So stick to natural juices.

One of the better results I saw from my fasting experience was that I have more self control over my eating habits. I have always been a binge type of eater.

After my fast, I felt like I could restrain myself easier. It is probably a mental attribute. I mean if I can go without eating for 7 days then I can sure keep myself from eating something I shouldn't.

So although I don¡¯t think you can use fasting as a diet or weight loss program, I do feel that it can be a great start to a proper weight loss diet and exercise program.

I think it is definitely something that everybody should do at least once a year. If you have any health problems you
should consult a physician before starting any weight loss program. And, if you absolutely cannot go without food then simply try going a few days eating vegetables and fruits only. This will give you most of the same results as the fasting will. However, I recommend the fast over the fruits
and vegetables because of the confidence and control you will begin to enjoy as a result.

There is nothing as profitable to a drug company as a patient who is forced to take some drug for the rest of his life - heart medications fit in that category.

Avoid or limit these oils. Omega-3, meanwhile, is typically found in flaxseed oil, walnut oil, and fish. However, flax seed oil is the best oil where Omega-3 and Omega-6 are balanced.

Food for a Healthy Immune System

.

Focusing on food for a healthy immune system can increase overall good health and nutrition.
Foods that build your immune system are rich in vitamins, minerals, trace elements and omega-3 fatty acids.
Including these foods in your weekly diet can improve your energy levels and decrease the number of colds and other bugs that you get every year.

Some people rely on daily multi-vitamins and dietary supplements, instead of food for a healthy immune system and good supplements are always a good idea.

It is not always possible to eat the right foods in the right combination every day. For instance, you may think of oranges or orange juice when you think of foods that build your immune system, but oranges are not the only foods that contain Vitamin C.

And if you don't have enough calcium and magnesium in your diet, then your cells cannot efficiently absorb Vitamin C.

Complicating things further, if you drink a glass of orange juice and a glass of milk, then the acidic content of the juice can sour the milk, leading to stomach upset.

People who have frequent heartburn or are lactose intolerant may not be able to include either orange juice or milk in their diets.

Citrus fruits are highly acidic and trigger heartburn in many people. Regular milk causes bloating, pain, gas and diarrhea in people who are lactose intolerant. So, what is a person to do?

Crabmeat, lobster and oysters are all rich in calcium, magnesium and vitamin C. Salmon is an important food for a healthy immune system and is often referred to as a "super food" by dieticians and nutritionists, because it contains numerous vitamins and minerals, plus a healthy amount of omega-3 fatty acids, believed to be beneficial in preventing heart disease, cancer and arthritis.

Broccoli, tomatoes, peaches and apples are good sources of Vitamin C and are all foods that build your immune system. Broccoli is another food that contains numerous vitamins and minerals, including Vitamin C, calcium, magnesium and selenium. Not familiar with selenium?

Selenium is an essential trace mineral that may not be included in your daily multi-vitamin, but very important to human health. It is essential to proper immune system function, as well as numerous metabolic pathways.

Remember chicken soup? Chicken is another good source of selenium and is one of the foods that build your immune system strength.

Like mushrooms? Researchers studying foods that build immune system strength by increasing white blood cell counts learned that shitake mushrooms worked.

The study concluded that beta glucans found in edible mushrooms increased white blood cell counts. White blood cells are primary infection fighters. Don't like mushrooms? Beta glucans are biologically active compounds found in numerous plant foods and some immune system dietary supplements.

So, in order to include some of the best foods that build your immune system in your weekly diet, eat salmon, tuna and/or seafood three or four times a week, chicken three or four times a week, a variety of fruits and vegetables including broccoli and mushrooms, whenever possible.

Relying on food for a healthy immune system may not be enough, depending on where you live or work.

A daily multi-vitamin can help and there are immune system supplements that contain beta glucans, herbs and other ingredients that can also help, particularly during cold and flu season.

Do you always get sore throat?

.

One of my good friend, MJ, who is also a voice coach has this problem. She easily get her sore throat and it will be cured for only few weeks and it will return.

I was really concern so i did my research.

She always say that her throat is always itchy and sometimes with burning sensation. One sign before you get fever, flu and tonsillitis is sore throat.

Sore throat is mad e by stretococcus bacterium. One main reason why people get this is beacuse of poor and unhealthy diet high intake of unrefined carbohydrates, too much sweets.

Like those in biscuits, table sugar, etc.

Stress, smoking and drinking are the reasons why our bodies reduce it's resistance against infections.

You should add enough Vitamin D and E to your daily diet to avoid sore throat.

Vitamin D can be found in fatty fish. That's why you have to be in a fish diet if you have sore throat.

This will prevent infections and provide healthy immune system..

While Vitamin E can be found in Avocado, Olive oil, nuts and seeds.

So always remember prevention is still better than cure.

Find out the flu outbreak in US

.

Google Flu Trends uses aggregated Google search data to estimate flu activity in your state up to two weeks faster than traditional flu surveillance systems.
Google have found a close relationship between how many people search for flu-related topics and how many people actually have flu symptoms. Of course, not every person who searches for "flu" is actually sick, but a pattern emerges when all the flu-related search queries from each state and region are added together. Google compared their query counts with data from a surveillance system managed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and found that some search queries tend to be popular exactly when flu season is happening. By counting how often Google see these search queries, Google can estimate how much flu is circulating in various regions of the United States.

Stroke,What does it mean?

. Thursday, January 1, 2009

Stroke. What does it mean? Blood flow blockage or brain attacks?
Stroke is usually defined as two types:
Ischemic (caused by a blockage in an artery )
Hemorrhagic (caused by a tear in the wall of the artery that produces bleeding in the brain )

A disruption in blood flow to the brain is the primary cause of a stroke.

It can be disastrous and cause brain damage or even death. Our brain receives about 25% of the body's oxygen but it cannot store it.

Brain cells require a constant supply of oxygen to stay healthy and function properly. Therefore, within minutes of a stroke, oxygen is cut off in the brain leading to death of brain cells .

This also leads to some parts of the brain losing control over the activity of some parts of the body, resulting in temporary or permanent disability or paralysis.

The following complications could arise and may need continued medical cares :

Urinary incontinence and urinary infection
Cramp

Falls, usually to the affected side
Reduced blood supply to the brain may result in confusion and speech disturbances.
What are the symptoms of a stroke ???

People at risk or partners of people at risk for stroke should be aware of the general symptoms and the victim should get to the hospital as soon as possible after these warning signs appear.

Some include the following:

Headache in the back of the head
Dizziness
Nausea and vomiting
Inability to speak clearly
Weakness in the arms and legs
Tingling or numbness in the mouth, cheeks or gums

What are the risk factors for a stroke ???
SMOKING - people who smoke have higher risk to get stroke than nonsmokers
HEART DISEASE - heart disease and stroke are closely related for many reasons. They often have common risk factors.
STRESS - mental and emotional factors (stress and depression) have also been linked as a higher risk for having stroke.
AGE - people most at risk for stroke are older adults particularly those with high blood pressure, overweight, smoke or have diabetes.
SLEEP APNEA - which may contribute to the narrowing of the carotid artery, appears to increase the risk for stroke.
ATHEROSCLEROSIS - hardening of the arteries.

How to have healthy hair

.

A number of hair troubles can make us worried so that it becomes very difficult to have healthy hair.

People’s hair loss has their own problems different with others, including poor diet, too much tension and an enlarged thyroid gland etc.

Thinning of hair can be a result of numerous conditions or changes occurring in your body. For males, baldness or hair thinning is socially acceptable even though hair loss can be an awful experience.

I Some of them have a full head of hair, opt to shave their heads completely to fit their image. But for women, those things are slightly different.

Bald women are few and far between and if you do experience losing hair, it is a very traumatic and distressing experience. It is important to identify some of the minor conditions that may otherwise be fatal to the hair.

If you want to take care of your hair, oiling is very necessary because hair is given proper treatment which would mean a massage with some of the most beneficial hair tonics. Having the right hair tonic is very important.

Sometimes our hectic schedule makes oiling and washing of our hair as the last priority. If you want healthy hair which lasts longer - oiling is the best remedy. Many companies in the market are manufacturing hair tonics that are good and are known to cure hair problems.

It is better to select a product based on your requirement rather than believe in their ads and ad campaigns.

Ideally, it is always better to massage your hair and leave it overnight. Scalp massaging can also help counteract hair loss by increasing and stimulating the blood flow to your hair follicles.

Massaging is better to use your fingers rather than your palm. Rotate your fingers gently in a circular motion which can help the tonic to reach the scalp and to the roots of the hair.

Massaging your hair with your palms may damage your hair ,and even break them. Hair tonics are also an effective dandruff cure as they prevent the drying of the scalp. Shampoo your hair in the morning and use a quality conditioner to give it a shining look. Oiling your hair thrice a week may be good enough to improve the vitality of hair and prevent hair loss.

It can provide the vital nutrients that are essential for hair growth.

Diet can be another leading contributory factor to loss of hair. The crash dieting to lose weight does nothing to help your situation.

Instead of trying and preventing hair loss and also losing weight, you should try and avoid crash diets.

It’s quite helpful to better hair with improving your diet and lifestyle with some regular exercise, eating lots of fresh fruit and vegetables and drinking more water etc.

Otherwise, it is sensible to consult hair experts to guide you through the nusances too.
You may find that keeping your hair healthy is not difficult after all!

Hair loss or baldness home remedies Baldness is a state of lacking hair /hair thinning on the head.

Noticing hair falling out, thinning, or staying in large amounts on people’s comb can make them worried and should consult a doctor.

A number of people can be cured with dermatologist‘s correct diagnosis of evaluating a patient's hair-loss problem to find the cause in order to decide how to resolve it Baldness may have several different causes.

Hair falls can due to thyroid imbalance, stress, chemicals in hair styling products, genetic reasons, pollution and lack of proper nutrition. Hair loss is a sign of lacking vitamins in your diet, but has nothing to do with meal schedules. Hair will regrow spontaneously in some forms of hair loss. Other forms can be treated successfully with right treatment.

For the some forms of hair thinning for which there is no cure now.

Genetic baldness is caused by the body's failure to produce new hairs and not by excessive hair loss.

Poor diet will affect your hair as well as stress such as tight pony tails and braids. Well weight loss and anxiety can cause hair loss

Tips for breasts health for women

The last couple of days my breasts are been EXTREMELY sore and swollen.

More swollen even then when I was preg with my son!

This morning DH went to put his arm around me in bed and brushed over my breast...I almost jumped out of my skin! About 2 weeks ago, I had brown discharge for a couple of days with one day of bright red afterward (not really even a whole day and mostly when I wiped, very little on the pad).

Also have had some tenderness in lower abdomin/pelvic area. Like when I lay on my stomache it's uncomfortable.

Now for some background. I was diagnosed with PCOS 12 years ago.

I managed to get preg with my son on 100mg Clomid. After his birth via c-section the dr. told us that if we wanted to have another child we should start trying ASAP since my ovaries were very large compared to normal.

We tried Clomid and Met for as long as the dr. would allow to no avail.

Now, 10 years later, I have been diagnosed with diabetes and have been taking AvandaMet for about 4 months. I have not had a period since starting the AvandaMet.

Took a HPT about 2-3 weeks ago. That was negative.

I do know that for sometimes HPTs are not accurate since the last time I took one, it was negative and my son was born 8 months later

Danger from HIV/AIDS for senior old people

While HIV/AIDS is common knowledge that people from women, children , color and homoerotism -- what we never think about senior.

Old people often live a lonely life, but they still need to recreated if possible. But they ignore some risks sometimes.
Or they even didn’t think about some dangers because of their age. For instance, HIV AIDS old people often got, and women more easily.

HIV /AIDS and old age converge and aggravate each other rather than conflict in many ways.

One of My friend Rose at age 66 had pasted the several stages of grief and began to enter her second year as a widow.

That is not an easy task but necessary for us who has survived instincts. She started to date again and I couldn’t have been happier for her.
Tom was a long time friend from our college days, like a brother in a sense.

At the beginning, they enjoyed dinner and theater, but soon developed into holidays at his house. However, hey hadn't considered condoms at old age, they are less likely to get tested. She would not have asked Sam about his sexual activities .But she feel sudden weight loss and fatigue.

When her doctor told that she tested positive for HIV, she was shocked. She wanted to know that how does this happen at her age.
Her medical said that anyone can get HIV/AIDS in spite of age without protected sex, or sharing needles with an infected partner.

She even didn't use condoms to prevent risk, because she did not know Tom's drug or sexual history.

I feel sad for her. Then we decided to do a study of patients at about 55 years with HIV/AIDS. But we realized that most of them often made same mistake as Rose. Otherwise, in their senior years, people don't like to talk about their sex with a young doctor.

We found it is still believed that elder citizens live a simple life without sexual activities. Unfortunately, old people do not always accord to public images any more.

Without the afraid of pregnancy, older women are becoming infected at a higher proportion than senior men.

The post-menopausal woman who may have more sexual activities with more partners. Because the vaginal walls thin and lubrication decreases, the membranes are more likely to tear during sexual intercourse, easier for the virus HIV AIDS .

But whatever the causes, failure to communicate leads to failure of diagnosis in its early, most treatable stages. HIV and old age worsen each other .

Senior citizens who have lost a spouse, they will become more isolated if their children know they have HIV AIDS.

Most adult children lack the patience, and don't want to care their parents in their ultimate life.

Natural remedies to get rid of Vaginal Yeast Infections

It is no surprise that stress and dietary habits affects our health.

It has been shown that women who eat a lot of carbohydrates and bread have either an increased risk for yeast infections or a harder time getting rid of yeast infections.
Diabetics, who have higher blood sugar levels, are prone to have more yeast infections than those who are not diabetic. Perhaps lowering the amount of bread in the diet would help.

Beleive it or not, I HAVE heard of this occuring. It is extremely rare. I beleive there was a semi-popular b-list 70's pornstar who had this 'deformity' as it has been called on this site.

Very, very few women have actually acknowledged that they have this phenomenon. Those same women reported that their sexual pleasure was probably no different than any other woman...stimulation of the clitoris was pleasurable and exciting, and sex felt wonderful.

Situations like this have been reported as a minor form of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. It is also beleived that this is a minor hermaphrodite development that never fully took.

I remember about 6 years back in High School, we learned that the clitoris is located at the top, and in rare cases located at the bottom of the vagina. Apparently it is not necessarily a deformity, though alcohol or substance abuse may increase chances of a girl being born with this.
Stress is also a major determinant of our health status. Stress increases blood sugar levels and consequently increases the risk of vaginal yeast infections. Relaxation techniques such as yoga, deep breathing, and massages can help.

Yeast infections can be caused by many things in women.

If you are on medication, that is a biggie... I've never heard of yeast infections from him drinking beer.. perhaps he has a yeast infection that he is transfering to you.
Some women have cronic yeast infections from the foods that they eat too.
I would ask a doctor if this is a recurring problem.
Garlic has antifungal activities and can destroy fungus at normal body temperatures.

When fresh garlic is crushed, allicin, the active ingredient that kills fungi, is produced.
The crushed garlic is wrapped in gauze immediately before insertion into the vagina. Powered or dried garlic does not have the same ability to kill fungi as fresh garlic. Side effects to the garlic include an offensive odor and possible allergic reactions.

Beer intake by your husband has practically nothing to do with your infection. It might be that your husband is a carrier of Monilial fungus. which we normally all are and you have less glycogen in the squamous cells which line your vagina, leading to decreased vaginal pH. Another reason for infection can be prolonged use of antibiotics either by you or by your husband. Antibiotics kill normal flora and give a chance to fungus to multiply.

A womans' uretha is very short.

So when she has sex there is a risk of infection. After sex a woman should always urinate immediately. This will cut down on yeast infections and sexually transmitted diseases.
Yogurt douching has been shown to be effective.

It is well recognized that yeast infections caused by Candida are a result of an imbalance of the normal vaginal flora.
Candida, which is normally found in the vagina, is an opportunistic organism that takes over and overgrows when the normal balance of organisms in the body is disrupted.

The Lactobacilus population, which is also normally found in the vaginal flora and maintains the pH, is one of the organisms that are over run by Candida.

Yes it is, but may take longer than if you just took some otc meds; also if you eat more sugars it will take longer to go away and may worsen.

You should not however have intercourse while you have an infection since you can transfer it to your partner, and him back to you and then you're just stuck in a loop

Diabetes and if Diabetes how to eat?

.

Diabetes mellitus is a condition in which the pancreas no longer produces enough insulin or when cells stop responding to the insulin that is produced, so that glucose in the blood cannot be absorbed into the cells of the body.

Symptoms include frequent urination, lethargy, excessive thirst, and hunger. The treatment includes changes in diet, oral medications, and in some cases, daily injections of insulin.

Diabetes is a condition in which body is unable to effectively utilize glucose for its energy needs.
As a result glucose levels rise in the blood and extra glucose is expelled in the urine. Diabetes was once thought to be irreversible. Today almost every one of us knows someone who has diabetes.

Two of the main contributing factor to this rapid increase are sedentary lifestyle and peoples tendency of dining out.

Step 1:
Monitor your blood sugar regularly. Adjustments in diet, medication and exercise can be made accordingly.

Step 2:
Stick to the monitoring protocol prescribed by your doctor. Generally, blood is monitored before meals and at bedtime.

Step 3:
Utilize blood testing. In the past, urine testing was more common, but blood is more accurate. New and improved ways to test blood are being developed all the time. Check with your doctor, your pharmacist or the company that manufactures your monitoring equipment.

Step 4:
Take your medication as prescribed, whether it is insulin or an oral drug.

Step 5:
Develop a personal meal plan that you will stick with. Speak with a nutritionist or a diabetic educator and be candid about your food likes and dislikes.

Step 6:
Stay on your meal plan. Explore new foods, but keep track of how they affect you.

Step 7:
Eat carbohydrates that supply plenty of fiber, vitamins and minerals, such as fresh vegetables and fruit. Save sugary foods for special occasions.

Step 8:
Lose weight if you are overweight. Losing weight can make a big difference in your treatment plan. Many people are able to eliminate or reduce the amount of medication needed - or avoid needing it in the first place - once they take the weight off.

Step 9:
Speak with your doctor if your program doesn't appear to be keeping your blood sugar under control. Modifications may be necessary.
Rice is a cereal, cereals are rich sources of complex carbohydrates, carbohydrates are basically monosaccharide sugars and when consumed are converted into sugar into your blood stream.

Diabetics have to watch the sugar they consume. Rice in your body turns into sugar.....that's the connection.

Now, strictly speaking you do not need to eat carbohydrates directly, because proteins are converted by the body into carbohydrates.

Then if you eat meat and rice, you are eating carbohydrates "twice" then giving your body "twice" the sugar. Not good for a diabetic diet.
Urine testing for glucose is seldom recommended anymore.

The major reason is that an elevated or lowered renal threshold will give false information.
The renal threshold can be determined by emptying the bladder and testing this urine with the taking of a concurrent blood-sugar (glucose) test. You should then eat a meal, testing the urine and blood sugar 1 hour, 2 hours, and 3 hours afterward.

The renal threshold is determined by matching each blood-sugar result with the urine test that follows it (not the urine test taken at the same time as the blood-sugar test).

The normal renal threshold is at blood-sugar levels of 160-180 mgfdl (9-10 mmol). Children and pregnant women often run renal thresholds of less than 160 mgfdl (9 mmol).

Elderly people have a tendency to have renal thresholds greater than 180 mgfdl (10 mmol), and often greater than 200 mgfdl (11 mmol).

Remember that damage to blood vessels and nerves begins at blood-sugar levels above 150 mgfdl (8 mmol), so a person with a renal threshold of 200 mgfdl (11 mmol) could have a negative urine test for sugar (glucose) and still be developing complications.

Types of Arthritis

.

Arthritis dates back to prehistoric times and is seen all through the ages in the joints of the skeleton remains.

Most of you will Ahave problems with your joints and it may be arthritis. Arthritis is associated with aging but it is not caused because you are aging. Arthritis is caused by the body not been fed the proper nutrients that keep your joints health and free of wear and tear.

There are plenty of joints in your body and typically there are only specific joints that have arthritic pain. Those are the ones that you use frequently. For men it is
knees, spine, and feet. For women it is fingers, hands, knees, and spine.

Arthritis means inflammation of the joint. When your joints have bone-to-bone contact and grind against each other that area becomes swollen and inflamed.

There are two main type of arthritis – osteoarthritis and rheumatoid – and others that are less known.

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis means inflammation of the bony part of your joint. As your joints move against each other, the protective coating and surrounding material – membranes, oil sacs, cartilage – wear down. This wear down occurs when the joints see excess activity.

Normally you would not expect to see this wear down condition since there are many joints that see excess activity and don’t become inflamed or arthritic.

There millions of people who don’t get arthritis, yet the use their joints are used just as much and perhaps even more.

Then there are people who don’t use their joint to excess and still get arthritis.

A group of diseases affecting joints or their component tissues. Several types of arthritis are recognized, and these can be divided into groups by their clinical course and pathologic appearance.

There are four basic types of arthritis: inflammatory arthritis, degenerative joint disease, nonarticular rheumatism, and miscellaneous arthritis.

Inflammatory arthritis is characterized by inflammation of tissues associated with joints.

Connective tissue diseases, crystal deposition diseases, infectious arthritis, and spondyloarthropathies are examples of inflammatory arthritis.
Connective tissue diseases are a group of acute and chronic diseases characterized by involvement of joints, connective tissue, serosal membranes, and small blood vessels.

These diseases are divided into acquired disorders (for example, rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, scleroderma, polymyositis, vasculitis) and rare hereditary diseases (for example, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome).

Rheumatoid arthritis is the most common variety of inflammatory arthritis. It occurs in younger and middle-aged persons and is characterized by noninfectious inflammation of the synovium (joint-lining membrane) frequently associated with extraarticular manifestations other than in the joints.

The etiology is unknown, but genetic, immunologic, infectious, and psychologic disturbances have all been suggested. The systemic disease follows a variable but slowly progressive course, marked by spontaneous flares and remissions.

There are three groups of crystal deposition disease classified according to type of crystal involvement: gout (monosodium urate), pseudogout (calcium pyrophosphate), and calcific tendonitis (hydroxyapatite).

Infectious arthritis is an inflammatory joint disease caused by the invasion of the synovial joint by living microorganisms such as gonorrheal, streptococcal, and staphylococcal bacteria.

So the actual cause of arthritis is more than excess activity.

The cause of arthritis has come down to a single or combination of nutritional deficiencies, excess joint activity, and emotional issues.

What is Leukemia all about?

It is estimated that there will be another 44,270 cases of Leukemia diagnosed and about 21,700 deaths caused by it this year.

There was a time when a diagnosis of leukemia was a certain death sentence, and the numbers are improving every year.

Leukemias is cancer of the blood and occur when there is an excess accumulation of abnormal blood cells which starts in the blood-forming tissue of the body, like the bone marrow.

Large numbers of these blast cells turn into abnormal white blood cell, instead of maturing normally. It is mainly assorted in the critical or the chronic category. The normal functions of white blood cells cannot be carried out.

They spill into the blood and may spread into organs such as the liver, spleen, lungs, kidneys and into the cerebro spinal fluid to the brain.

Scientists and researchers are learning more and more as they study its cause. They are also developing better and more effective ways to cure it.

People with leukemia look forward to a better quality of life and less chance of dying from it ,because of all the research that has been done and continues to be done.

In leukemia, the cells do not mature properly but continue to multiply and the bone marrow is replaced by these abnormal cells spilling over into the blood. Because the bone marrow can no longer produce sufficient normal blood cells and platelets, anemia, infections and bruising occurs.

Still the main reasons that are believed to attribute overall are viral infections, despite the lack of a primary authentic cause for this disease; hereditary factors and several types of chemicals and radiations. Physical mutations and anemia are also the dominant contributors.

On visibility they should be dealt with immediately in accordance with the nature of the cancer. Blood tests and white blood cells count are taken for the diagnosis.

The decision for treatment following diagnosis is made in according to the symptoms of the individual patients.

Common treatments include induction chemotherapy, bone marrow transplants and several other maintenance treatments that aim at curing the patients.

At present ,several researches including the criteria, causes, diagnosis and treatments are being carried out, in order to find methods for both treatment and the improvement of life.

Definition of Asbestos cancer

.

Asbestos is the name given to a group of minerals that occur naturally in the environment as bundles of fibers and can be separated into thin, durable threads. These fibers are resistant to heat, fire, and chemicals and do not conduct electricity.

For these reasons, asbestos has been widely used in many industries.

There are two subgroups of asbestos: chrysotile, which has curly fibers and is in the serpentine family of minerals; and amphibole asbestos, which has straight, needle-like fibers and includes actinolite, tremolite, anthophyllite, crocidolite, and amosite asbestos.

Chrysotile asbestos is the form that has been used predominantly in commercial applications worldwide.

How is asbestos used?
Asbestos was mined and used commercially in North America beginning in the late 1800s. Its use increased greatly during World War II (3, 4).

Since then, asbestos has been used in many industries. For example, the building and construction industry has used it for strengthening cement and plastics as well as for insulation, roofing, fireproofing, and sound absorption.

The shipbuilding industry has used asbestos to insulate boilers, steampipes, and hot water pipes. The automotive industry uses asbestos in vehicle brakeshoes and clutch pads.

Asbestos has also been used in ceiling and floor tile;
paints, coatings, and adhesives; and plastics.

In addition, asbestos has been found in vermiculite-containing consumer garden products and some talc-containing crayons.

Who is at risk for an asbestos-related disease?
Everyone is exposed to asbestos at some time during their life.
Low levels of asbestos are present in the air, water, and soil.
However, most people do not become ill from their exposure.
People who become ill from asbestos are usually those who are exposed to it on a regular basis, most often in a job where they work directly with the material or through substantial environmental contact.

Since the early 1940s, millions of American workers have been exposed to asbestos. Health hazards from asbestos fibers have been recognized in workers exposed in shipbuilding trades, asbestos mining and milling, manufacturing of asbestos textiles and other asbestos products, insulation work in the construction and building trades, and a variety of other trades.

Demolition workers, drywall removers, asbestos removal workers, firefighters, and automobile workers also may be exposed to asbestos fibers.
However, recent studies do not support an increased risk of lung cancer or mesothelioma among automobile mechanics exposed to asbestos through brake repair (10). As a result of Government regulations and improved work practices, today’s workers (those without previous exposure) are likely to face smaller risks than did those exposed in the past.

Those involved in the rescue, recovery, and cleanup at the site of the September 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center (WTC) in New York City are another group at risk of developing an asbestos-related disease.

Because asbestos was used in the construction of the North Tower of the WTC, when the building was attacked, hundreds of tons of asbestos were released into the atmosphere. Those at greatest risk include firefighters, police officers, paramedics, construction workers, and volunteers who worked in the rubble at Ground Zero. Others at risk include residents in close proximity to the WTC towers and those who attended schools nearby.

These populations will need to be followed to determine the long-term health consequences of their exposure
Asbestos is a general term applied to certain fibrous minerals long popular for their thermal resistance, tensile strength, and acoustic insulation properties. Asbestos minerals are divided into two groups: serpentine and amphibole. Only one type of asbestos is derived from serpentine minerals: chrysotile, also known as white asbestos.

Amphibole minerals include five asbestos species: amosite, crocidolite, tremolite, anthophyllite, and actinolite. Two of these are the most commercially valuable
forms: amosite, or brown asbestos, and crocidolite, or blue asbestos.

More than 30 million tons of asbestos in its various forms have been mined in the past century. Asbestos is one of the most pervasive environmental hazards in the world, present in more than 3,000 manufactured products.

All forms of asbestos can result in asbestosis (a progressive fibrotic disease of the lungs), lung cancer, and mesothelioma, a cancer arising in the membranes lining the pleural and peritoneal cavities.
